Back in the waiting room, there were sandwiches on a big table, and fruit and jugs of squash, but no one was eating. Patterson Patterson stood in the corner, staring out at the room with his shark eyes, while all the parents were busy coaching their kids. One of the Persephones was sobbing quietly, because she had got one question wrong. Her mum stood next to her, tapping her watch.

‘No time for tears, P,’ she said. ‘While you cry, your chances of winning die. Remember?’

Some of the contestants looked up shyly as Keith ‘No Points’ Keithstofferson walked through the room; Titus even chanced a small wave.

Keith found Keith Sr, who wrapped him in his big purple cape and gave him a hug. Peanuts nibbled his ear and squawked ‘Dairylea triangles’.

‘I didn’t exactly smash that,’ said Keith. ‘Those questions were hard!’

‘That’s all right, son,’ said Keith Sr. ‘You were very Keith. It was good to see. And you heard all that clapping, right? The audience loved you.’

A young boy came up to Keith and asked for his autograph.

‘You were so cool,’ he said. ‘The way you just totally didn’t know anything? It was awesome.’

‘Err … Thanks.’

‘Are you going to get no points in the next round, too?’ said the boy.

Keith bit into his sandwich, but said nothing.
